Weekly Diaspora: Moving Immigration Reform Forward


This week’s Diaspora highlights Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who “presented his key principles for comprehensive immigration reform” at a rally in D.C., the  thousands who were there to support CIR, a rally in Nevada, the idea that resistance to reform is based not in national security but in national cultural identity, the campaign to highlight CNN’s hypocrisy toward Latinos, and one aspect of the approaching Census count and how it affects the immigrant community right now.

Weekly Pulse: Finance Committee (Finally) Passes Health Bill

Yesterday, the Senate Finance Committee finally passed its health care reform proposal by a vote of 14-9. As expected, the bill contains no public option. Now the all the health bills have passed their respective committees the debate moves back behind closed doors where party leaders will craft the legislation that Congress will actually vote on.

Now that the bill has cleared all the committees, it’s up to the Democrats to decide whether there will be a public option in the final bill.
